School children launch anti-plastic campaign

Alarmed by the increasing environmental threat owing to the plastic menace, the children of Swallow Centre for Emancipating Education in Manjai Kunda have launched an anti-plastic campaign.

They want to encourage Gambians to give up plastic bags and explore alternative packaging.

The principal of Swallow Centre for Emancipating Education, which is one of the leading schools in the country, told What’s On-Gambia: “We had an anti-plastic awareness march yesterday through Manjai. The children held a banner that clearly stated that our school is saying no to the use of plastic materials.”

Annette Müller Jaiteh continued: “Our children have already declared our school a plastic-free zone. We are no longer allowing anyone to bring something wrapped in plastic to school.”

According to her, the children are poised to make as many people as possible aware of the dangers of plastic materials since the government is not very strict on it any more.

Swallow Centre for Emancipating Education will organise debates, talks and competitions on environment-related issues, for creating awareness in the school and among the public.
