Scotland’s Glasgow Girls FC ends Gambia tour

A Scottish female football team, Glasgow Girls FC is leaving the country today after a successful tour aimed at promoting girls and women’s football in the country.

The team, consisting of 22 players and four coaches, arrived on the 18th November, 2015. According to their Facebook page, they were greeted with dancers and drums at the Banjul International Airport.

“Gambia knows how to make us feel welcome,” they wrote.

Glasgow Girls FC was invited into the country by the Gambia Football Federation (GFF). During their week-long stay, they played series of friendly games, in addition to an engagement with the Gilkock Football Academy in Brufut.

The Scottish girls defeated Jeswang United 2-1 last week making them the first European team to win a FIFA approved game on Gambian soil.

They described their tour as a huge success. Their presence in the country generated an increase in media interest in girls and women’s football.
