If the Commissioner of Customs Joe Njie retires this summer, the recruitment process to replace him could cause a rift among customs officers at the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) headquarters in Banjul.
Sources revealed the two contenders for the job, Ismaila Jallow and Alagie Mbye are now deploying marabouts against each other to be appointed as the new Commissioner of Customs - a job that can earn them millions of Dalasis annually through illegal acts involving dishonesty.
"Alagie Mbye is very close to the First Family. He communicates frequently with Barrow and Fatoumatta. He was also Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe's close buddy until a few months ago when Freedom Newspaper reported that the president was grooming him to replace Yankuba," said a source.
Our source further disclosed: "The Commissioner General don't want Alagie to be the new Commissioner of Customs because he could launch a coup against him from the State House.
"Due to the on-going fight for the position, the two contenders are now using their staff to sabotage each other. There is a serious juju fight right now at the headquarters."
The GRA is the most corrupt public institution in the country. Most of their managers, especially those in the Customs unit, are among the richest Gambians on earth.
