Drug and alcohol abuse are damaging young Gambians in Italy

Alcohol and drugs have become a huge problem among young Gambian migrants in Italy, according to a member of the Gambian Youth Association in Catania.

Karamo Ceesay disclosed Gambians are among the top alcohol and drug abusers in the streets of Catania- the second largest metropolitan city of Sicily.

"There have been multiples arrests of Gambians in the past weeks for violent street crimes including pickpocketing tourists," he said.

He added: "They are tarnishing our country's image in this city. They usually occupy a place called San Berrillo, where they fight each other every day over petty issues."

According to Karamo, who also came to Italy via the Medinarenean Sea, they established the Gambia Youth Association in Catania to help some of their peers to overcome their addictions and become better Gambians.

"We want to strengthen the brotherhood among us and help those who want to quit alcohol and drug abuse. It's not easy, but we are trying. Some of them have completely gone off the rails because of the use of hardcore drugs.

"If you see the brothers in the neighbourhood of San Berillo, you might cry. Some of them are in jail."

Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is home to one of the largest Gambian communities in Italy.
