The Single Mothers Empowerment Association (SMEA-G) celebrated its first anniversary on Sunday, September 6, at the Gambia Teachers Union Conference Hall in Brikama.
Speaking to What’s On-Gambia, SMEA-G founder Amie B. Jallow said the association was established last year and currently has members across the country.
“We currently have 900 registered members and over 1,000 unregistered members from different parts of the country. Some are in villages without mobile network coverage, making it difficult for them to be actively involved in our activities,” Amie said.
She added that more than 150 members attended the association’s first anniversary celebration in Brikama.
“We are planning to tour the country to introduce the association to more single mums,” she said.
Amie clarified that not all members are currently single. According to her, some have since remarried but continue to identify as single mothers based on their past experiences.
She said some members had gone through difficult experiences in their marriages and that SMEA-G had helped them rebuild their lives.
“In our association, we are together to empower each other and transform lives,” said Amie.
