The Saints have joined the Gambian Football Federation (GFF) league, playing in the third division.
The popular school team consists of more than 35 young players, who want to become professional footballers.
“We played our first game against Real de Banjul’s team B and the match ended 1-1. The boys love football and we want to support them achieve their dreams,” said Principal Martin Gomez.
Martin is one of the few principles in the country that is well-known for promoting sports in his school. He is the president of the Gambia Secondary Sports Association.
He said: “My aim is to produce young players that are competent enough to compete on international level. Sulayman Marr, who is now playing in the Spanish league, was part of the school team. We prepared him!”
Martin added: “It is very expensive to run an active school team. We provide scholarships to the players, and also give them fares during training sessions.”
The school team’s coach and Physical Education teacher, Samuel Kargbo disclosed that St. Augustine’s is lucky to have highly skilled and committed young players.
“Right now, I can provide the GFF with 10 very good players. I am not joking, I know what my boys can do,” he said.
The players in the team are current students in different grades, and sometimes they are joined by former students who are still actively playing football.
Kargno’s message to the GFF executive is: “come and watch our games! Start organizing school tournaments to scout young talented players.”
“But we need help to keep the team going” said Principal Martin.
“We need training equipment, jerseys, footballs, and all that is needed to help the boys stay focused and be able to achieve their dreams.”
