One of the top students in this year’s Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examinations (GBECE) wants to become a cardiologist.
Mariama Sambou was in her final year in junior school when her mother succumbed to a cardiac infection last summer. The tragedy was devastating for her. But could it be a hand of destiny?
Well, the star student of 22nd July Academy, formerly Charles Jow Academy, has scored one in all her subjects, except for English Language in which she bagged a two. She made it to the top 25 list of best students in the 2015 GABECE Results.
“It was a very difficult moment, but I refused to let it affect my performance in school,” she said of her mum’s death.
As she prepares to start her senior secondary education at Nusrat Senior Secondary School, she still nurses her dream of becoming a cardiologist.
When asked how she celebrated her achievement, Mariama responded: “I went to my mum’s grave and prayed for her. I promised to make her proud wherever she is.”
She said she is very thankful to have a supportive family that always encourages her to do well in school.
