She wants to use her own experience to help bring an end to Female Genital Mutilation, a harmful traditional practice that is still widespread in The Gambia.
In an interview with America’s famous Cosmopolitan Magazine, Jaha Dukureh said most women won’t share their stories because they are afraid of what will happen to them. The fight against FGM tends to be frowned upon by many Gambian families.
Jaha, according to the magazine, is leading a campaign to pressure the American government to create legislation that would mandate FGM education and create opportunities for survivors to seek help.
