Banjul’s Fatoumatta Njai, popularly known as Touma, might soon become The Gambia’s first female political party leader, according to reports reaching What’s On-Gambia.

A source revealed that her name is being tossed around as a possible replacement for Omar A Jallow (OJ) as leader of the People's Progressive Party (PPP).

Touma isn’t well known on the national stage, but she’s quite popular in Banjul.

 “She’s quietly laying the groundwork to replace OJ, who is planning to retire soon. I think she is one of the most educated among the young party members,” said our source.

About Touma

She is the niece of former First Lady Chilel Njie-Jawara and mother to three children.  Her husband is said to be a wealthy businessman.

Touma attended some of the country’s prestigious schools before moving to the United Kingdom, where she bagged a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent.

Unlike many young Gambians who studied abroad, she returned home to work in the Civil Service. However, she later returned to the United Kingdom for her Master’s Degree at the Edinburg Business School.

The rising politician entered politics last year and was elected as the National Assembly Member for Banjul South.

Touma is not very popular among President Adama Barrow supporters for her repeated attacks on the Gambian leader. But in a recent Facebook post, she said: “Intimidation works not, fear is non-existent. We need to get the ball rolling.”
