University of The Gambia student, Ya Fatou Sarr talks marriage, virginity, and more

Ya Fatou Sarr is a second year law student at the University of The Gambia.  Enjoy our interview with her.

What’s On-Gambia: What is your relationship status?

Ya Fatou: I’m married!

Since when?

Not long ago, in August 2014.

Where is your husband?

He is in the USA.

Why are you girls so obsessed withsemesters?

Not all girls! Of course, some are obsessed because of the monetary aspect of it or the status they are going to have in society.

But for me, I met my husband before he travelled and I didn’t know he was thinking of travelling.

What type of wedding did you have?

We are yet to have our wedding ceremony.

Tell us, why is wedding so expensive nowadays?

It is as a result of the expenses and what girls want to display on their wedding day. The entertainment, hair extensions, make-ups, food and dresses all cost a lot of money.

Why is it so important for some girls to have a three-day wedding?

Some people believe that a traditional wedding should be three days.

What happens during the three days?

I am not very sure, but I know the ngomar is always a day before the wedding. On the day of the wedding the bride is handed over to the groom. The final day is celebrated if the girl proved her virgin.

Are men so concerned about virginity?

Not all men are concerned about it. Some would rather disvirgin you before tying the knot. There are others that would fool you and take your virginity and end up marrying another girl.

Do you think today’s girls are very protective of their virginity?

You never know! Some believe that it is always possible to regain your virginity before marriage.

Now back to wedding, how much does an average wedding cost?

More than D60, 000.

Isn’t that small?

It depends on what the girl and her family wants. It is less expensive with the hijabis.

Are you planning to have an expensive wedding?

No! I like spending wisely. Having an expensive wedding and at the end being broke is not a good idea.
