If the United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe withdraws his candidacy due to legal issues, here are some of the prominent names who might be in contention to be the party's presidential flagbearer in 2021. 

Talib Ahmed Bensouda 

Born in 1986 in Cape Point, Talib is very popular among young UDP members, especially those in the Kanifing Municipality, where he is currently serving as mayor.  

They believe he is the person who can inject fresh energy in the party. 

But Talib's young age and inexperience in public administration and governance might affect his run for the flagbearship.  

Lamin JK Sanneh 

The son of a PPP minister, Lamin Sanneh worked in different countries including the United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Sierra Leone and Saudi Arabia.  

He was the Executive Director at the Gambia OIC Secretariat until last year when he resigned. Sanneh was responsible for the mobilisation of resources and implementation of projects for the OIC summit.  

Although highly educated and well experienced, his popularity among party supporters is yet to be tested.  

Oley Dibba-Wadda 

A strategic analyst and expert in international development policy and programming, Oley Dibba-Wadda is among the newest members of the party.  

She joined the UDP less than one year after declaring her intention to run for president in 2021. Like Lamin Sanneh, Oley is not well known among grassroots supporters.  

She is said to be very good at funds mobilisation management, but Oley could be a divisive choice for the next UDP flagbearer. 

Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh 

Born in Kombo Gunjur, Amadou Scattred Janneh is popular among UDP supporters in the West Coast Region for supporting and financing community initiatives such as the environmental activism in Kombo South against the Chinese fish meal processing factory.  

But he has one enormous problem: Janneh, an ex-minister in the former Jammeh government, holds Gambian and American dual citizenship, which disqualifies him from running for president.  

Dr Janneh taught for ten years at the University of Tennessee in the USA until 2000 when he established his own business.  

Borry Touray 

One of the most prominent lawyers in the country, Borry is a diehard UDPian who will appeal to much of the party's membership. 

Unlike some of his colleagues in the UDP executive, he managed to get the Banjul High Court to quash criminal charges proffered on him during former President Jammeh's regime. 

Borry is said to be compassionate and always ready to come to one’s aid with great generosity and open-handedness. 

 Yankuba Dabo 

A UK-trained lawyer, Yankuba has an interesting backstory as the son of a founding member of the UDP. 

He recently wrote on Facebook: "Democracy in practice demands the manifestations of the people’s wishes through political affiliations, elections, campaigns, etc! A Protest is a manifestation of a people’s wishes, whether one agrees or not! The Gambia must tolerate protests, if it espouses democracy, for democracy demands protests!" 

Yankuba might have the backing of UDP members in the Diaspora if he joins the flagbearship race.
