Why Some Young Women Choose to Be “Side Chicks” to Senior Government Officials

It’s an open secret in The Gambia that some senior government officials have more than just official “duties.” Behind the tailored suits and luxury vehicles lie secret relationships with young women, some young enough to be their daughters.

So, what’s really driving these “side chick” relationships?

Access to Fuel Coupons

Every year, millions of dalasis in taxpayer money are allocated for fuel coupons meant for official use. However, some senior government officials share these coupons with their side chicks, allowing them to benefit directly from public resources intended for government operations.

Travel Privileges

Senior government officials frequently travel on official business, and some prefer not to go alone. In certain instances, they discreetly bring along their side chicks, particularly on trips to destinations with minimal visa restrictions.

Business Opportunities

Senior government officials involved in corrupt practices often use illicit funds from kickbacks, inflated contracts, or excessive per diems to financially support their side chicks. In some cases, this money helps the women start small businesses – funded by proceeds of corruption.

Employment Connections

Influence comes with power, and some senior government officials use theirs to secure civil service jobs for their side chicks or their relatives. Such favoritism often thrives in institutions where nepotism is tolerated, including customs, ports, and other resource-heavy agencies.

Lavish Gifts and Lifestyle

From the latest smartphones to designer clothing, extravagant gifts are a common way to sustain side chick relationships. These material rewards not only maintain loyalty but also boost the social standing of the women involved.
