Another case of alleged medical negligence has come to light, this time from The Gambia’s main hospital, Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul.
A young mother, Oumie Fofana recently took to Facebook to share her harrowing experience of the hospital's poor patient care after her son was involved in a serious accident.
According to Oumie, her son, who suffered a horrific leg fracture, waited for four days before meeting a doctor.
“Four days we didn’t see a doctor. Can you imagine a kid being in an accident that was so bad and there was no doctor available to see him?"
She alleged that some of the country’s health workers don’t care about their patients.
“If you are not happy with your job, if you are not motivated, I think you should do something else rather than causing people pain.”
Some of her Facebook followers weighed in with one Pa Saihou saying: “I lost lots of friends and family through the negligence of some doctors.”
Emily Gomez, who lives in the USA, wrote: “Some of our health practitioners need to be in jail.”
Oumie’s son was later flown to Dakar for treatment.
