Young woman shares heartbreaking experience of being disowned by family over her bisexuality

A young woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, has shared with What's On-Gambia her painful experience of being disowned by her family due to her bisexuality.

In the interview, she recounted how her uncle reacted violently after discovering her sexual orientation. "He wanted to kill me when he found out I had feelings for girls," she revealed.

Her uncle even reported her to the police, as homosexuality is still illegal in The Gambia. Fearing for her life, she fled the country, embarking on a dangerous journey through deserts and across oceans before finding refuge in Sweden.

"I suffered from PTSD and survived a suicide attempt," she explained.

She also shared that her uncle tried to force her into becoming his second wife, as his current wife could not have children. "I went through hell at the hands of my uncle and some of my family members," she said.

After her mother's death, she felt even more vulnerable and decided to escape, claiming that another aunt tried to push her into prostitution to support the family.

Now living in a suburb of Stockholm, she expressed gratitude to Swedish authorities for giving her a chance to rebuild her life.
