Former singer-turned-social media influencer Nancy Nanz has initiated a bold campaign to raise awareness about the harmful effects of skin bleaching.
In a recent interview with What's On-Gambia, Nancy urged young, dark-skinned women to embrace their natural skin tones, warning of the dangers linked to popular bleaching products.
A former user of such products herself, Nancy revealed she once bleached her skin but eventually understood the health risks involved.
"The damage caused by bleaching goes far beyond appearances; it can lead to serious health issues like skin cancer," she explained. "Many bleaching creams contain harsh chemicals, but hydrogen peroxide is particularly harmful."
Nancy described how hydrogen peroxide, a common ingredient in many skin-lightening products, can break down essential proteins in the skin, causing inflammation, scarring, and heightened sensitivity to UV light—an increased risk factor for skin cancer.
"Over time, it thins the skin, making it more vulnerable to sun damage," she added.
Though no longer active in the music industry, Nancy said she is using her voice in a new way—advocating for women to stop using these products.
"Since I don’t sing anymore, I want to raise awareness and help fellow women. I’m offering therapy to those who want to regain their natural skin after stopping the use of bleaching creams."
Nancy further announced that her campaign has been registered as a foundation in The Gambia.
