President Adama Barrow might be forced to resign by Gambians after three years in the State House. Here are 12 people who might want to be on the ballot box in 2021.
Bakary Bunja Darboe: Fondly known as BB, he is very popular in Kiang and will continue to be popular because he changed so many lives during his stint as a minister in the Jawara government.
Mamma Kandeh:He was previously the National Assembly Member for Jimara. Mama is the leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress – the country’s biggest opposition party.
Ousainou Darboe: He is the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP). Although his party is currently the biggest in the country, he might be barred from running because of a criminal conviction during Jammeh’s era.
Halifa Sallah: The PDOIS leader could be a strong candidate in the presidential election, but his popularity is fairly low outside the Greater Banjul Area.
Mai Fatty: There are rumours he could become UDP’s presidential candidate if Darboe is barred from running. Mai is the leader of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) and a member of the “Tactical Alliance”.
Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay: She was once the speaker of the National Assembly. FJC has loads of experience in Gambian politics. Her father was among Banjul’s first politicians.
Dr Isatou Touray: She tried to run for nomination in 2016, but later joined the Coalition to throw her weight behind Adama Barrow. Dr Touray is the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration & Employment.
Dr Sidat Yaffa: He is an American-trained agronomist lecturing at the University of The Gambia. Dr Yaffa is very unlikely to receive much support from Gambian voters.
Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh: Although he wouldn’t do well in the election, Dr Janneh has already established his own political party. He was a former minister in the Jammeh government.
Sidi Sanneh: He is a controversial blogger. Sidi is an economist, who studied in the USA. He has experience in economic planning, agriculture, education, finance and trade.
Banka Manneh: He was a prominent member of the struggle to end Jammeh’s rule. Banka is currently in The Gambia preparing the ground for his entry into Gambian politics.
Hamat Bah: He’s the leader of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP). Hamat is currently the Minister of Tourism and Culture.
