Sarjo Trawally, a four-year-old girl from Latriya village in the Kombo South District of the West Coast Region, is in dire need of help for urgent overseas treatment, after she was diagnosed with cystic hygroma.
Cystic hygroma, also known as cystic lymphangioma and macrocystic lymphatic malformation, is an often congenital multiloculated lymphatic lesion that can arise anywhere, but is classically found in the left posterior triangle of the neck and armpits. This is the most common form of lymphangioma.
A medical report from the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, dated April 6 2016, stated that Sarjo was presented with a nine-month history (Rt) auricular swelling, which was progressively increasing in size associated with pain and fever.
According to the report, on examination, a mass size of about 8x6cm was found around the right temporal-maxillar auricular region, which was spherical with irregular edges, tender, firm in consistency, with no differential warmth or colour. The Brain CT- scan showed no intra cranial extension.
The report added that she was consented for cyst removal and findings were encapsulated cyst in temporal fossa, anterior and posterior auricular.
The report added that the patient, who was admitted at the Hospital on December 14, 2015, was discharged on day 14 post-operative and had three clinic follow-ups with evidence of good evolution and no complications, hence was discharged from clinic after three visits on December, 28, 2015.
Sarjo, however, on 17th April, 2016, it indicated, presented back at the Hospital with the whole (Rt) side of the face swollen, extending to the back of the head with an evolution of one month prior to presentation .This was said to be progressively increasing in size associate with pain and fever.
“There were no other systematic finding and vital signs were within range. Local examination show a massive multi lubulated swelling on the right side of the face extending to the right ear and back of the head measuring about 28x14cm. It has a superficial ulcer of about6x4cm with necrotic tissue, this swelling is smooth, firm in consistency, tender to touch, not mobile and it is attached to overlying skin,” the report further stated.
