Is the West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) coming to The Gambia to forcefully remove Jammeh from State House? This is the question many Gambians are pondering over right now.
Already, some people have started moving to the provinces- far away from Banjul – to escape any eventual violent confrontation between soldiers loyal to Jammeh and ECOMOG troops.
The president, in his New Year statement, said he has no plans of stepping down for president-elect Barrow unless there is a fresh election overseen by a God-fearing electoral commission.
According to a source close to the opposition Coalition, with or without ECOMOG in the country, they are going ahead with the inauguration of Barrow on the 19th January.
Where the inauguration will be held and who will administer the oath is still unknown to the public.
However, the source said: “The Coalition is ready for anything. The die is cast. Jammeh will either have to get off or get under. The people don’t want him.”
He added: “West African leaders will want to stay true to their word. They will intervene, or so I believe. There’s a crack in the military, no doubt. Some of them may fight alongside them.”
