Outrage is brewing after a teacher at Muslim Upper Basic School in Brusubi, identified as Mr. Hamza, was dragged before the courts after allegedly impregnating a 15-year-old schoolgirl.
The explosive case is currently before Magistrate Thomas Touray at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, but the victim’s family said justice is moving at a painfully slow pace.
“The teacher was granted bail and allowed to continue teaching as if nothing happened. We are heartbroken and angry. Since August, there has been no hearing,” the girl’s aunt told What’s On Gambia.
According to the family, the disturbing matter was first reported to the police when she was two months pregnant. A child welfare officer, Fatou Bojang, was assigned to investigate and later forwarded the case file to the Kanifing prosecution office.
“In August, the case was only mentioned once. Since then, it’s been adjournment after adjournment – no hearing, no progress,” the aunt said.
Police confirmed the case is indeed in court but blamed the delay on the magistrate’s illness, explaining that Magistrate Touray is on sick leave and the case will continue once he returns.
When contacted, the school principal refused to comment, insisting that the matter is now before the court and should be left to the legal system.
However, a source within the school revealed that Mr. Hamza has been suspended, sparking further questions and controversy.
Asked why the teacher was not expelled outright, the source said: “I honestly don’t know. That decision was made by the board. All I can confirm is that he is suspended. You’ll have to ask the principal.”
As the case drags on, pressure is mounting from the victim’s family, who are demanding swift justice and accountability in a case that has shaken the school.
