Known among health experts in the country as the baby factory, Brikama District Hospital has recently recorded the delivery of 36 babies in one night.
The night of baby boom started with the delivery of a boy shortly after 8pm and ending with the birth of a boy also, before 9am the next day.
After successfully overseeing all the deliveries, the doctor on duty, Dr Yorro Bah, wrote on Facebook: “Post on call mood after 36 deliveries in one night including 3 vacuum deliveries....zero C/S, zero FSB, zero maternal mortality....all earned by 3 midwives and one medical doctor...good team work at Brikama District Hospital.....bravo colleagues for us setting a record.”
During a chat with What’s On-Gambia, Dr Bah described the 36 deliveries as an unusual excitement for him and his team.
According to him, since he was posted at the Brikama District Hospital one of his objectives is to reduce the number of maternal deaths and also, offer women the utmost decency during child birth.
The Brikama District Hospital is said to have the highest number of deliveries in the country. In a day, they receive more than 20 women in labour.
“We’re doing our best to serve our country and people despite the constraints at the hospital. This is our country!”
Dr Bah appealed to the authorities and charities to help them with more delivery beds at the maternity unit.
