Ebo Town derived its name from the occupation of Nigerians in that settlement. The country’s financial services sector – bank and insurance – is Nigerian dominated. As if that’s not enough, the domineering presence of Nigerians is also evidently felt in the informal business sector.
What’s-on-Gambiadiscovered that Nigerian businesses reign in Parka - one of the commercial streets in Latri Kunda Sabiji.
Majority of the store owners on the street are Nigerians. Igbo, not Wollof or Mandinka, is the most spoken language.
One of the storeowners, who begged for anonymity, told What’s On-Gambia: “I secured my store a few years ago shortly after arriving in the country. I came looking for an opportunity to travel to Europe but realised there are business opportunities here.”
The Nigerians at Parka are dealers of second hand car parts imported from European countries like Germany.
According to a resident, the street has taken a new identity since their arrival. She said Gambians feel like strangers despite living there for many years.
