What was Jarra East’s NAM doing in Senegambia at 3am on Sunday?

The National Assembly Member (NAM) for Jarra East, Haruna Barry of the National People’s Party (NPP), was spotted cruising through the Senegambia Strip in his official car in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 3am.

The 37-year-old politician was seen by clubgoers driving his multi-million dalasi Toyota Prado.

One of them, surprised by the sight, disclosed in a message to What's On-Gambia: “I was shocked to see him in that vehicle. I couldn’t understand why he didn’t use a taxi or private car.”

Haruna Barry, elected in 2022, is one of the youngest members of the National Assembly. He secured his seat after defeating the incumbent, Sainey Touray of the United Democratic Party (UDP), by a margin of 441 votes.

During his victory celebration, presidential aide Lamin Cham thanked the people of Jarra East for "liberating themselves" from opposition representation. Cham also reassured them that President Adama Barrow would prioritize their welfare and development.

But Haruna is widely regarded as ineffective by many in his constituency, with some even questioning his academic qualifications.

"There are rumors he doesn’t even have a Senior Secondary School certificate," one constituent claimed.

Critics further allege that Haruna's presence in the National Assembly is largely ceremonial. “He rarely speaks in parliament. It seems his only role is to vote in favor of the NPP’s agenda,” said another disgruntled voter from Jarra East.

Haruna is yet to explain his presence in Senegambia at such an unusual hour.
