A Gambian migrant based in Spain has been handed a rare opportunity – a trial with one of the biggest football clubs in Latvia.
Ensa Njie, now 24 years of age, left The Gambia seven years ago for Europe via the Mediterranean. The stakes were too damn high but for the young Gambian, the bloody journey was worth the risks.
“One of the reasons why I came to Europe is to achieve one of my biggest dreams – to be a professional footballer,” he said.
After playing for three different clubs in Spanish regional leagues, Ensa was last week invited by Latvia’s RSF FC for a week-long trial.
“I couldn’t believe it! My dream of playing for a top team has come true. I am right now in Latvia and they are impressed with my skills. Things are looking promising here and they have already extended my stay.”
The Bundung-born footballer said he is the only black footballer in the team.
“I am used to being the only black in the group. It was the same when I was in Spain. I have never had any problem of racism,” he said.
Ensa Njie hopes that good showings in RFS FC would lead to an opportunity to play for the Scorpions.
