The councillor of Bakoteh ward, Lamin K Jammeh has suggested children born in The Gambia to foreign parents should acquire third class citizenship and be barred from holding key government positions.
Jammeh was among the speakers during a recent consultation meeting in his award organized by the Constitutional Review Commission.
The councillor’s suggestion fell flat with many Gambians.
He was ripped to shreds on Facebook, with one Mbanyick Senghore in England saying: “What a load of nonsense.”
Another England-based Gambian, Sarjo Tamba added: “He is suffering from brain damage. He needs to be rehabilitated.”
Facebook user, Mamajang Jallow also commented: “I don't blame you people because most of the Gambian population has never travelled more than 30kms from where they were born. If you don't know, then let me tell you, Gambia is one of the poorest countries in Africa.”
Councillor Jammeh also suggested the right to dual citizenship for Gambians in the Diaspora should be scrapped.
