It is one of the kabilos in Brikama with an APRC bigwig as alkalo. But this never helped to garner support for the former ruling party.
Reports reaching What’s On-Gambia revealed that former President Yahya Jammeh has never won an election in Missira.
Although we were unable to verify this with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the famouskabilo in Brikama North has always been an opposition stronghold.
In the recent presidential election that brought Jammeh’s 22-year old rule to an end, majority of the voters in Missira voted for the opposition coalition led by Adama Barrow.
One of the most famous young politicians in the kabilo is Alieu (Lito) Darboe. He is a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
When asked why Jammeh is not popular in Missira, Alieu responded: “We felt Jammeh has not been defending the interest of Gambians. We’re angry because his government failed to provide us with a drainage system. Also, the disconnection of our street lights, which is a project initiated by us, angered many.”
In the December presidential election, Jammeh only managed to secure 292 votes, whilst opposition coalition candidate, Adama Barrow bagged 882.
Alieu revealed that most of the voters in Missira are ardent UDP supporters.
