Cable operator criticises government’s threat to prosecute copyright violators

The government’s threat to crack down on satellite channel privacy doesn’t sit well with a cable operator. Dodou Janko, whose reactions reads below, criticised the government for bowing to the interests of Big Brother in South Africa at the expense of hard working and innovative young Gambians.

Let’s all be realistic and frank to ourselves. Where do we used to watch international football or other games and where are we still watching them? Sports is a global thing and a way out of poverty. Professionals, agents, journalists, pundits and media houses are all enriching themselves through sports.

Let’s ask ourselves this question, where is the origin of DSTV? DSTV is a South African TV company that has agents outside its origin including the Gambia. DSTV provides its customers the chance to watch International football and other games for a chargeable fee of around D3000 to D4000 per month. Some Gambians are and still customers of DSTV.

DSTV of course pays tax to our Government but do we know how much money DSTV is transferring to South Africa every year.  Some hard working Gambians have established a business involving supplying people cables to watch International games and other foreign TVs for less than D300 per month. Their customers have appreciated the offer and these Gambians have employed other citizens. Is it fair to stop our own Gambian brothers from working simply because of a foreign company? Is it fair? This Gambians pay more tax than the foreign Company.

This type of business is found in other African countries namely Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania etc. Why are those people not banning it? We all want to watch our fellow Gambian Professionals and other professionals. Where did we watch Gambia's game against South Africa? Let’s all work together for the betterment of our dear motherland, THE GAMBIA
