The Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul has recently conducted its first-ever total hip replacement surgery.
The country's first orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Kebba Marenah said the surgery was a great milestone as it’s the first one to be conducted in a Gambian hospital.
Shortly after the surgery, he wrote on Twitter: "The team and I performed the first ever total hip replacement in The Gambia at EFSTH followed by a repeat performance at a private hospital. Long overdue but no time like the present."
Dr Marenah studied Medicine at the Imperial College London, a world-class university with a mission to benefit society through excellence in science, engineering, medicine and business.
The young doctor has a wide range of experience in Orthopaedics, especially trauma but also covering all major sub specialities including Paediatric Orthopaedics, Joint replacement surgery; Hand Surgery and Spinal surgery.
