EU deal raises questions about deportation of back way boys

Has President Barrow‘s government cleared the way for the mass deportation of back way boys in Germany, Italy and other European countries?

This is the question on the wagging tongues of many, after news broke out that the European Union (EU) renewed its assistance to the country by injecting 11 million Euros into The Gambia for youth employment.

“Our Administration proudly launched The Gambia Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) 09/02-2017, with support from the European Union. This project will create opportunities and secure employment for our youths and curb the back way syndrome,” Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment, Dr Isatou Touray wrote on her Facebook page.

There are speculations that one of the main reasons for launching the project is to prepare the ground for the deportation of hundreds of failed and illegal Gambian migrants in European countries.

However, a source at the Gambia Immigration Department said it’s too early to conjecture as to whether a full scale deportation would start anytime soon.
