Get ready to meet some famous actors! Top Hollywood stars are expected to attend the premiere of the new Roots movie at the Pencha Mi Hall on the 30th May, 2016.
Breaking the exciting news to What’s On-Gambia, a US-based Gambian, Lamin Jatta, who’s a direct descendant of Kunta Kinte, said: “The Gambia would become the first country in the history of Hollywood to premiere a Hollywood movie in Africa. This is great for our country and also, tourism.”
The movie, which was directed by LeVar Burton, features prominent names in the American film industry like Emmy-winning actor, Laurence John Fishburne, rapper T.I and leading black actor, Forest Whitaker.
British-born, Malachy Kirby stars as Kunta Kinte in the new version of Roots. He is also a popular actor, who was shortlisted for Outstanding Newcomer at the UK’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards in 2011 for his role in the acclaimed play, Mogadishu.
So far, the new Roots trailer is doing well online with nearly one million views since it was posted on YouTube in February, 2016.

The big premiere, on the 30th May, is expected to be attended senior government officials, village elders of Juffureh and some international guests.
