First Gambian Catholic bishop to be ordained in February

The first Gambian bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Banjul will be officially ordained on the 3rd February, 2018 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Rev. Fr. Gabriel Mendy was appointed last month to replace Fr. Robert Patrick Ellison who is expected to return to his native country, Ireland after serving for more than a decade.

According to a source, thousands of Catholics from different parts of The Gambia are expected to converge at the stadium for the historic event.

In a Facebook post, the Gambia Pastoral Institute along Kairaba Avenue described Rev. Fr. Gabriel Mendy’s appointment as a milestone in the history of the Catholic Diocese of Banjul.

The Rev. Fr. was born in Lamin in 1967 and holds a PhD in Systematic Theology. Before his appointment, he served as professor of ecclesiology, fundamental theology, theology of worship, liturgy and catechesis at the Spiritan International School of Theology in Nigeria.

Rev. Fr. Gabriel Mendy is well-known in the Diocese of Banjul, where he held different roles including pastoral service at Saint Peter’s parish and Saint Theresa’s parish.
