Gambia du dem: Opposition supporters in the Diaspora turn on Mamma Kandeh

Since the emergence of Dr. Isatou Touray, some Gambian opposition supporters abroad have been busy deriding Mamma Kandeh and his campaign.

They argued that the GDC leader is not sufficiently educated to lead the country and if he fails to rally behind Dr. Touray, a Ph.D holder, he will be to blame in December if President Jammeh gets re-elected.

Taking a swipe at Mamma, Fatoumatta Sandang wrote on Facebook: "Ok!! So all of a sudden GDC (Mamma Kandeh) has become the self-proclaimed biggest opposition party in The Gambia, right...just because he has been escorted by little boys on horses...Good."

Despite all the scorn poured on the GDC leader, he is still poised to become the country's next president.

One of his die-hard supporters online, Femi Mahoney said any coalition without his leadership may struggle to defeat Jammeh on Decemeber 1.

"After going through all the options, I am now convinced that Mamma Kandeh is the man," he said, adding "the political experience of Mr. Kandeh, charisma, his humility nature, exposition and eloquence in both English and German, just to name a few, can be supplemented by the glamorous resume of Dr. Touray."

According to former foreign minister, Sidi Sanneh, Mamma’s influence extends into the support base of other opposition parties.

Why should he quit his campaign and throw his weight behind a candidate who is yet to stand on a political podium?
