Gambia’s dysfunctional justice system: Bob Keita continues to languish in prison

Businessman Baboucarr Bob Keita is among dozens of Gambians who are stuck in Mile 2 prison without being tried or sentenced.

The chief executive officer of Fire Protect Gambia Ltd was sent to the country's central prison in 2021 after he was charged with raping his now ex-wife's sister resulting in pregnancy. He denied the charge.

His ex-wife, Sainabou disclosed at the high court in Bundung that her 16-year-old sister told her that Baboucarrr forced himself on her when they were alone in the house.

Sainabou's mother also alleged her daughter was raped by the businessman.

Baboucarr and Sainabou's marriage ended while he was in police detention. She later remarried to a "businessman" who claims to own a real estate company.

One of Sainabou's followers on social media said: "I think she's very brave to do what she wants and not be affected by what's going around her."

But her marriage with the businessman was short-lived and Sainabou quickly went ahead and erased all photos of him from her Instagram account. The memories that were deleted included pictures of them and Baboucarr's two children.

"He was a rebound husband," said a source.

It's not yet clear when the high court in Banjul would resume Baboucarr's trial. But so far most of the prosecution witnesses have testified.
