A football team of Gambians in Hannover, Germany are the winners of this year’s International Hannover Cup – a competition which gathers migrants from different countries including Senegal, Ghana, Poland, Spain and Turkey.
The boys lifted the trophy after defeating Congo at the Erika-Fisch Stadium on Saturday.
The goalkeeper of the team, Mustapha Thorp said: “We were so proud to represent our country, The Gambia. It was a very tough competition but we managed to emerge the champions.”
The International Hannover Cup was first organised in 2011 to promote unity among Hannover’s migrant community, which consists of more than 169 nationalities.
The previous winners were Greece (2011 and2013), Turkey (2012), Cameroon (2014), Poland (2015) and Turkey (2016 and 2017).
