A Gambian, Jaly Jawara, is among hundreds of international volunteers who are currently in Nepal to help rebuild the country.
The hotel worker is taking a break from his job to construct shelters for quake-hit victims. He is volunteering with the organisation, Bring Thoughts To Action.
Speaking to What’s On-Gambia from Napelese capital, Katmandu, Jaly said: “ I arrived in Nepal on the 8th July and I am staying in Kathmandu, where some parts are affected by the earthquake.”
The South Asian country, which has a population of more than 26million people, was hit by two earthquakes earlier this year, killing thousands, injuring tens of thousands and leaving millions without homes.
“I am helping to build some temporal shelters with bamboos so that they can have where to stay. And also I am helping in the distribution of tents in remote villages,” said Jaly.
He added: “I feel so proud to come here to help as you know we (Gambians) like to help people in need.”
Jaly, who is returning home in September, is a storekeeper at Kombo Beach Hotel in Kotu. His girlfriend is also part of the team in Nepal.
