Some Gambians have recently taken to Facebook calling for Foniankas in Kanilai to start paying for electricity consumption.
According to them, a vast majority of households in the former president’s native village have never paid a single butut to the coffers of the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC).
“Please management of NAWEC, I am not sure if you are aware of this, that villages in Kanilai are using free electricity. This is a very bad practice, especially at a time when the government needs every single dalasi it coffers,” wrote one of the most outspoken voices online, Femi Mahoney.
He added: “Not paying for utility is a crime. I hope you act ASAP!”
One Kebba Touray revealed that the people of Kanilai have been benefitting from free electricity for a very long time.
“Are they different from us?” he asked.
According to Alfusaney Baldeh: “Big crime indeed tantamount to cheating.”
Another Facebook user, Kewuleng Manneh also said: “Is not only Kanilai. The military barracks and sometop military officers and ministers are not paying their electricity and water bill. Former president Jawara too is not paying electricity and water bills in his Bakau resident.”
