Gina Bass has become the first Gambian female athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games after bagging her ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
The young athlete impressed in French Guyana last month as she set a new national record of 23.14 seconds in the 200 meter race.
Gina, an award-winning athlete, will likely be the country’s flag bearer at Rio.
In a press release, the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) revealed: “The qualified standard set for the Woman 200m to Rio 2016 is 23.20, meaning Miss Gina Bass is the second Gambian Athlete to clock the qualification standard for a summer Olympic Games, after Suwaibou Sanneh made it to the last Olympic Games in London 2012 in the 100m.”
Gina’s achievement has drawn nationwide acclaim, with popular sports presenter, Babucarr Nani Sey praising her for making the sports fraternity proud.
