Government turns blind eye as expired food floods markets

Expired food products are flooding the markets across the country, putting the lives of hundreds of thousands of Gambians at stake.

In an interview with What's On-Gambia, the Director General of the Food Safety and Quality Authority, Momodou Bah confirmed there are expired food products in the markets.

"I am aware of increasing complaints of expired food or to near expiration. Companies are trying to get rid of their near to expiration by flooding them in the markets, " he said.

He added: "We have confiscated many expired products of such nature in the markets over the past months. We will increase vigilance and urge consumers to do the same."

Responding to allegations that FSQA is a toothless quango, he responded: "At the moment, there are inadequacies that need fixing and we are working tirelessly to overcome them. Give us 6-10 months, I will remind you this.

Mr Momodou Bah was appointed as FSQA's boss earlier this year after the redeployment of his predecessor, Zainab Jallow to the Ministry of Energy as Deputy Permanent Secretary.
