Heartbroken mum relives how daughter bled to death after genital mutilation

Saffiatou Darboe is full of sorrow. Her intention for allowing female genital mutilation to be conducted on her daughter is now a matter for the courts to judge. But the poor mother is reliving the pains her daughter endured before she took her last breath.

Aminata Drammeh, five-month-old daughter of Saffiatou, died less than two weeks after she was subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in her home village in Sankandi, Kiang. She’s is the first known victim of the harmful practice since it was outlawed by the National Assembly last year.

Saffiatou, the mother and Sunkaru Darboe, the grandmother are facing trial at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court presided by Omar Cham.

“I went to the garden and left my baby with the nanny (bambanoo). I don’t know who cut her,” Saffiatou was quoted as saying by Gamcotrap.

She added:  “She was almost healed, but on Monday, 10 days, after she was cut, the blood burst and she bled heavily at the end I could not figure out where the blood was coming from. I ran to get help from the health worker but could not find the health worker and I could not stop the bleeding.”

Many are hoping this landmark case, which is the first of its kind would instigate a crackdown on FGM which is now practiced underground in private homes.

Gamcotrap, an organization famous for its campaign against the practice, wrote on their Facebook page: “The case will set precedence about the application of the law on FGM in The Gambia. It is unfortunate that women have to be taken to court but also it expresses the importance and seriousness of the State in taking legal stand in the protection of children from FGM. “
