She has been described by many as Gambia’s answer to Viviane Ndour. Since she burst onto the scene, Rugie has produced some of the best singles in the country.
The 24-year-old is without doubt one of the best singers today. The Gambia’s love affair with her is growing stronger and stronger each year. In an Exclusive interview with What’s On-Gambia, Rugie confirmed that she is single, but we’re not sure if she is ready to mingle. Enjoy the interview:
What’s on Gambia: Briefly tell us about yourself?
Rugie: Wowww okay. My real name is Rugiatou Jallow and I’m from a Fula family. I was born and brought up in The Gambia, an ex-student of Ndows Comprehensive and graduated in 2007.
When did you start singing?
I started singing at high school, with a rap group from my school called Hood Hustlers. One of our prominent members is the rapper, Vypa. I was sixteen at that time.
Why music and no other profession?
Well I love me and I believe music chose me. Music is a part of me. When I was young, I loved singing to myself and to my mum. I also loved imitating singers and as I grew older I knew it was what I have to do, as a career. I thank God for giving me the voice to sing.
How did your parents feel when they realized you wanted to do music as your career?
(Laughs) ..It wasn’t a surprise to my parents that I wanted to be a musician. I grew up always singing to them and miming new songs on the radio. So they are very supportive. My mum is my number one fan and the first person to listen to every new record from me.
Are you still signed to Musico Records?
No, I am no longer signed to them. It was long over!
How did Musico discover you and what was it like working with them?
They heard a couple of songs I made which impressed them so they contacted me.
So who is managing you now?
I don’t have a manager yet but I have a friend that is working as an acting manager for me.
Which musicians inspired you most?
I was inspired by the likes of Céline Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Brandy and Beyoncé. I also got inspired by Viviane. I like the way she fuses RnB and mabalax – very creative! Coumba Gawlo is another star!
What is your greatest accomplishment in music (so far)?
My greatest accomplishment is when people dear to me confess on how much hope they have in me and what they feel when listening to my songs. That makes me feel emotionally good. It is like my hard work is paying off. I also see it as an accomplishment when I make songs that people can relate to and songs that can earn me numerous fans.
In the wake of all the competition from upcoming female singers in the industry how do you intend to up your game?
Competition is good! It makes you better in whatever you do. I am very happy that we have a lot of female talents coming up - It’s a good thing for the country. The only way to stay on top is to make good and mature songs that people can relate to and also try to connect with your songs.
Are your songs written by you alone or it is a result of collaboration with other artists and producers?
I write my own songs.
What do you think of the Gambia music industry?
I believe that Gambian music is progressing and I am happy about it. But we still have a lot to put in order. We need to build up an industry where there is proper coordination and support from all stakeholders. Piracy should be banned.
What are your hobbies?
I love watching TV, listening to music and surfing the internet.
Is Rugie single?
(Laughs) I am not married yet.
Yes that I know, are you single?
(Laughs) hmm single I guess.
Any message to your fans?
To my fans I say a big thank you for their love and patience. I know they’re expecting more from me and the wait is long but I promised that I will make the long wait very worthy.... I love you all.
