Here are the powerful young women at the TRRC

Here are the hardworking and powerful young women at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).

Horejah Bala Gaye

She was called to the Bar of The Gambia in 2006. Horejah holds an LLM in International Development Law and Human Rights from the University of Warwick in England.

Before her appointment as deputy counsel at the TRRC, she was a trial lawyer at the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague in the Netherlands.

One of Horejah’s colleagues at the ICC, Melissa L.Simms wrote on Twitter: “Wonderful development in The Gambia, their long walk to a robust rule of law system continues apace. Also, a delight to see Horejah Bala-Gaye contributing to this important work through her engagement as the deputy counsel for the TRRC.”

Musu Bakoto Sawo

According to UNICEF, Musu is a tireless women rights advocate.  She is the deputy executive secretary at the TRRC.

A lecturer at the University of The Gambia, Musu was in 2018 awarded British Human Rights Award for her involvement in the fight to end Female Genital Mutilation in The Gambia.

She holds an LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Rohey Sanyang

She recently graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Law - the first ever in the history of the Faculty of Law at the University of The Gambia.

Rohey is the lead researcher at the TRRC.

Catherine Ngaima Sisay

A lecturer at the University of The Gambia, Ngaima is the head of the psychosocial support unit of the TRRC.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from National Yang Ming University in Taiwan.

Anna N’gulu Jones

She is the youngest commissioner at the TRRC.  Anna studied International Relations at Webster University and has certificates in Conflict Analysis and Mediation and Conflict Prevention from Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center.

She is the National Network Coordinator for the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP).
