How a hoax about Matida Daffeh’s UDP candidature gets national attention

What’s On-Gambialast week published women’s rights activist, Matida Daffeh’s replacement of Ousainou Darboe as United Democratic Party’s Secretary General and presidential candidate, but only few people knew it was a spoof.

The hoax went viral online and even attracted reactions published on the front pages of national newspapers likeForoyaa and The Point.

“We are not into politics, but sometimes we like publishing political satires using humor, exaggeration and irony to lighten up the political arena,” What’s On-Gambia’s editor clarified.

”We want to assure UDP that we meant absolutely no disrespect or malice towards their party and Secretary General, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe.”

However, journalist and activist Sam Phatey see nothing wrong with the publication.

“Let's have some humor in our politics,” he says in reaction to criticisms of the story. “Sometimes we are so reactive, so combative we can't even read in between the lines. The hoax story written by What's On - Gambia actually gave me a good laugh after I read the UDP congress was done in "Brikama Masaringsu"! We know the kind of stories WOG writes so are so in this box that we can't just read and laugh. I guess some of us have been in America and went to school here and yet do not understand that most stories written by The Onion on politics are like what WOG wrote. Chill people and why is The Point Newspaper just headlining this instead of going to look for some serious stories.”
