Street begging by children is alarmingly rearing its ugly head again despite the executive ban, but Binta Jeng, the founder of Life Transformation Foundation (LTF), is on a mission to rid the streets of street beggars.
She established LTF with the help of her friends and family to address the menace with particular focus on women and children through entrepreneurship and education.
According to a source close to Binta: “She picks children from the streets and enroll them into schools. She has transformed the lives of numerous young people in the country.”
One of the children her foundation rescued off the streets of Serre Kunda is a 4-year-old girl (name withheld). Like many other child beggars, she was assisting her mother to make ends meet.
According the foundation’s website, they have successfully transformed the little girl’s life by enrolling her in school.
Another young girl they supported is Yamudaw Jallow. She was begging on the streets to settle her eye treatment medical bills.
With the help of ITF, Yamudow has undergone medical treatment and is finally back in school.
Begging is one of social issues confronting The Gambia. Binta Jeng is widely praised for providing shelter and happiness to children on the streets.
