Popular Senegalese singer Mia Guisse has come under fire after using the phrase "Na Dougou" during a recent performance in Dakar and the USA.
The expression, which in Wolof roughly translates to "let it enter," sparked controversy, with some interpreting it as a sexual innuendo.
Mame Mactar Guèye, the president of Jamra, a prominent Senegalese Islamic organization, filed a complaint with authorities, accusing Mia of promoting "verbal pornography".
The singer was summoned for questioning by the Cybercrime Unit of the Senegalese Police Force on Tuesday. A group of her supporters gathered outside the station in a show of solidarity.
Mame Mactar Guèye wants Mia to publicly clarify the meaning of the phrase and explain her intentions. "She is a role model to many young girls, and she must be more responsible with the language she uses on stage," he said.
If convicted of public indecency, Mia —currently one of Senegal's most-watched artists on YouTube with over 100 million views—could face jail time, potentially jeopardizing her career.
