National athletes threaten to stop representing Gambia

Some of The Gambia’s most recognised athletes have threatened to stop representing the country at international athletics championship and games.

According to reliable information reaching What’s On-Gambia, they did not receive any cash rewards from the government since their return from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

One of the athletes, who wants to remain anonymous, confirmed they have not been paid their allowances.

“We are planning to write to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to lodge a complaint against the Ministry of Youth and Sports.  We need our money!”

He continued: “Some of us were recently at the ministry and met both the Permanent Secretary and his deputy.  According to them, there is no money for our allowances. The National Olympic Committee (NOC) also wrote them but to no avail.”

Six athletes represented The Gambia at the Commonwealth Games.
