Nda and Toldo at risk of being dropped despite helping Gambia qualify for AFCON

Pa Modou Jagne, popularly known as Nda and Modou Jobe, also known as Toldo, might not be on The Gambia's roster for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, despite helping the national team to qualify for the first time in the country's football history.

According to Baboucarr Camara, the director of marketing and communications at the Gambia Football Federation, coach Tom Saintfiet wants to” focus on the future and has some exciting young players he’s preparing for the AFCON”.

"The coach has argued that Pa Modou has not played at club level for two years and that's the reason for his continued exclusion," he said.

When asked why goalkeeper Toldo wasn't invited, Mr. Camara replied: "Coach Saintfiet has three exciting goalkeepers in Sheikh Sini, Lamin Sarr and Baboucarr Gaye to choose from."

He denied claims that Toldo was dropped by the coach because he was amongst the players who boycotted a meeting with President Adama Barrow earlier this year, over the government's failure to fulfill its promise of paying them bonuses for qualifying for AFCON.

"They're not involved at club level. That's the reason for their exclusion, nothing political. I'm aware that even before we secured qualification, there has always been that plan of transition because the focus is for the future.," he said.

Nda and Toldo were among the most respected footballers on the national team.
