Ndeysan! Leaks continue to plague Barrow’s State House

Since he was sworn-in as the 3rd president of the Republic of The Gambia, Adama Barrow and his administration have been plagued by leaks of sensitive information.

According to a senior government official at the Quadrangle in Banjul, the unrelenting pace of unauthorised discloses have caused a lot of distractions and distrust among them.

One of the most recent leaks is a confidential letter from the Office of the President, titled "Promotion of Peace and Stability in The Gambia Through Constructive Engagement With the Diaspora".

Dated 6th August 2019 and addressed to the Permanent Secretary at the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, the letter was written and signed by one Jainaba Manjang for the Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service.

In it, she told the permanent secretary that it has come to the attention of the Office of the President that a growing influence on public opinion in the country originates from the Gambians in the diaspora

"In the spirit of the "New Gambia" such free speech and scrutiny should not be discouraged due to its importance in a free and democratic society. However, it is important to sensitise each and everyone toward the responsibilities which come with these fundamental rights, particularly with regards to the propagation of misinformation and any acts leading to the instigation of violence or civil unrest in The Gambia."

Jainaba continued: "In view of the above, the Office of the President hereby encourages your office through our diplomatic missions, to encourage Gambians abroad for the purpose of promoting greater peace and stability in the country through encouraging the responsible exercise of people's rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.

"Consider that this decision was an outcome of the last security briefing held on Monday, 5th August 2019."

Who is behind the State House leaks?

Shortly after Jainaba Marong's letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad was leaked, Eye Africa TV Online disclosed on Facebook that a "high-profile and authoritative source" told them that United Democratic Party (UDP) sympathisers in the government are behind the frequent leaks.

However, one Abu Maryam Camara Danso commented: "Could he or she provide evidence in support of his or her baseless allegation."

Former police investigator, Aziz Bojang, also wrote: "I don't know whether Eye Africa TV should be posting stuff like this on social media because it doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe the president is bankrolling them."

A Barrow Fans Club insider revealed to What's On-Gambia that the leaks are beginning to annoy and enrage the president.
