Omar Ceesay becomes Gambia’s youngest-ever political party chairman

The National Assembly member for Niamina East, Hon. Omar Ceesay has been appointed as the national chairman of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC). He replaced Demba Sabally, who recently resigned to join the National People's Party of President Adama Barrow.

At age 26, Omar is now the youngest national chairman of a political party, and by far the youngest in the political history of The Gambia.

Shortly after his appointment by his party's Central Executive Committee, his colleague MC Cham Jr. wrote on Facebook: "Honourable Omar Ceesay, I am wishing you all the best in your new office. We were delighted to hear about your appointment as party Chairman. We are sure that under your great leadership, wisdom and guidance, the GDC will strive to much greater heights and achievements."

The former Gambia College student was only 22 when he entered the National Assembly to represent the people of Niamina West.

Despite his young age, Omar Ceesay, who's one of the president's most outspoken critics, has successfully portrayed himself to be a rising star in Gambian politics.
