He has been in exile for more than 3 years after losing the 2016 presidential elections.
Former President Yahya Jammeh wants to return home from Equatorial Guinea before the highly-anticipated 2021 presidential election.
A source disclosed: "The government wants him to return after the election, but he insisted if he's going to return it would be before December 2021."
The source, who begged for anonymity, added: "One of the reasons why the TRRC's mandate was extended is because they hope they could convince him to testify before the commissioners and later apologise to the nation for the alleged human rights violations against him."
Former President Jammeh currently lives in Equatorial Guinea, where he was granted asylum by President Teodoro Obiang. His supporters want him to return home and run for president again.
