The youth of Brikama Missira are teaming up to construct a drainage system in their kabilo (ward) to address the perennial problem of flooding.
Floods have in recent years - this year not an exception – wreaked havoc in that community. Residents have been displaced, household materials and food items destroyed and roads virtually inaccessible.
“Our intention is stop the flood by having a proper drainage system that will allow the water to have an easy passage,” said Alieu Darboe, secretary of the community’s development committee.
He added: “We cannot do it alone and that is why we also wrote to the area council for their help. The chairman of our committee has sent a letter to the Brikama Area Council requesting for help to construct the drainage system.”
According to him, the residents of the kabilo are very concerned about the terrible state of their roads. Some of them are forced to stay indoors whenever it rains.
Alieu disclosed that some members of the kabilo living abroad, mainly in the USA and Canada, are also about to launch a fundraising campaign to support the project.
Missira is one of the kibilos in Brikama. It is located along the Trans-Gambia Highway, The Gambia’s most important road network.
