The Gambia is among 148 countries participating in Expo Milan 2015 - an international agriculture and gastronomy-themed event that started on the 1st May and will run for six months in Milan, Italy.
The Expo is said to be one of the largest worldwide events organised to unite countries, institutions, companies and citizens to discuss and discover issues related to the availability of safe, nutritious, sufficient food, traditions and culture of food. Over 20 million people are expected to visit Expo Milan 2015.
The effort to ensure The Gambia’s participation was spearheaded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Employment through the Consulate General of The Gambia in Milan which for the past two years has played a key role in this successful bid.
According to information reaching What’s On-Gambia, The Gambia was last week among eight countries that put up lively displays of regional fruits, vegetables and national dishes. This was presented to the Italian Minister of Agriculture, top Expo officials and visitors.
Representing the country was Harriet Saine, who gave an expose of Gambian legumes and other foodstuff in a program aired on Italian TV. She is the only Gambian-born staff at the office of the Gambian Consul General to Italy and San Marino.
According to Harriet, The Gambia has been allocated a fully equipped and strategically positioned pavilion to exhibit vegetables and legumes prevalent in the country’s farming activities and typical cuisine.
She said: “There is a kitchen and food stall run by a Gambian couple, Medoun and Maimuna Bittaye, experienced in food vending at such events. She has represented The Gambia at previous Expo events around the world. On a daily basis the kitchen churns out exquisite Gambian cuisine with favourites like Benachin and Domodo to the delight of the stall’s many visitors. The food stall has become popular with visitors from countries all over the world coming by to try our Gambian delicacies.”
